Thyroid Diet Plan — What to Eat (and Avoid) with Hypothyroidism

An Indian-food thyroid diet: iodine, selenium, iron and B12 sources, gluten and soy myths, and a simple weekly plate for hypothyroid women.

Nutrients your thyroid actually needs

Hypothyroidism responds best when four nutrients are consistently on your plate: iodine, selenium, iron and vitamin B12. A deficiency in any of these can keep TSH stubbornly high even on medication.

  • Iodine: iodised salt, curd, eggs, dairy. Avoid pink Himalayan salt as your only salt.
  • Selenium: 2 Brazil nuts or a handful of sunflower seeds daily.
  • Iron: rajma, palak, beetroot, jaggery + a vitamin C source (lemon, amla).
  • B12: eggs, curd, paneer — or a doctor-guided supplement if you're vegetarian.

What to limit — the honest version

You do not need to give up wheat, dal or soy forever. The real levers are: no raw cruciferous overload (raw cabbage/kale smoothies daily), take thyroid medicine 45–60 minutes before food and coffee, and don't take calcium/iron within 4 hours of your dose.

A simple daily plate

  • Wake: warm water + thyroid tablet on empty stomach.
  • Breakfast (after 45 min): 2 eggs or moong chilla + curd + fruit.
  • Lunch: 2 rotis + dal + sabzi + salad with lemon.
  • Snack: handful of nuts + green tea.
  • Dinner: khichdi or paneer bhurji + cooked greens by 8 pm.

Frequently asked

Will diet reverse hypothyroidism?
Diet supports the medication — it rarely replaces it. But the right nutrients often lower your required dose over time.
Is soy really bad?
Moderate soy (tofu, soy milk once a day) is fine, taken 4 hours away from your thyroid tablet.
How long till I feel better?
Most women feel a real energy lift in 6–8 weeks of consistent nutrition + medicine + sleep.
