Healthy Habits for Kids — Food, Sleep & Screens That Actually Work

A gentle, realistic guide for Indian parents — building nutrition, sleep, movement and emotional habits that grow with your child.

Kids don't need perfect — they need a rhythm

Children copy what they see. A calm, predictable rhythm at home — meal times, sleep time, some outdoor play — does more for their health than any supplement or expensive school lunchbox.

The everyday basics

  • One fruit and one vegetable at every meal — small portions count.
  • Protein at breakfast — eggs, milk, paneer, moong chilla, curd. Keeps focus steady in class.
  • 60 minutes of outdoor play daily — sunlight for vitamin D and mood, movement for growth.
  • Fixed sleep window — kids under 12 need 9–11 hours. Same lights-out time every night.
  • Screens limited and shared — no screens during meals, no screens in bedrooms.
  • Water always on the table — juices and colas are treats, not everyday drinks.

Emotional health matters as much

Ask them one open question daily — 'what was the best and worst part of today?' Feeling heard builds confidence, reduces anxiety and makes tough conversations easier as they grow.

Frequently asked

My child is a very fussy eater — help?
Offer the same food 8–10 times without pressure. Kids often need repeated safe exposure before they accept a new taste.
Are multivitamins necessary?
Only if a paediatrician confirms a deficiency. Food-first is safer and more sustainable.
How much screen time is okay?
For 6–12 year-olds: under 1 hour of recreational screens on school days, always outside meals and bedtime.
